I want to make a looping movie in flash, then export it as a Quicktime .MOV, then burn it to a CD and play the movie on a portable DVD player at a booth for my company's convention this summer.
Is this possible?
I have attempted it with a simple shape tween and get an error message saying, "the current version of Quicktime does not support this type of movie." or something like that.
Just curious if anyone else has attempted this with any success.
Respectfully,

If your FLA is anything more than just a simple collection of keyframes, then Flash will not export the mov correctly unless you select the export format as 'QuickTime Video'. Even then, it can only handle animated events on the main timeline. Ie., no movieclip based animations for example.
I've quickly tested this on MX 2004 and Quicktime Pro 6.5.2 on a Mac.
Thanks for your reply. I'd like to reccommend something for you to try (or any other forum member).
A former instructor told me to try exporting the movie with the export setting set to Flash version 4.0 compatability, and then also selecting QuickTime as an export option.
I tried it and it worked, somewhat. No sound came through on the .MOV. I had a looping background sound which worked in the SWF.
And this is strictly a looping "slide show" type Flash movie. No clickable items or buttons. (Like the old looping VHS displays in department and drug stores.)
Let me know if you can duplicate this or get the sound to work.
Thanks,

I figured it out. Streaming audio has to be disabled in the Flash Publish settings, in addition to being set for Flash 4 for the .mov to export properly.
Also, Flash should be set to publish at a screen size of 720x486 to view properly. So the orientation of the movie needs to be like a TV or an aspect ratio of 3:4.
Then, the .mov will have to be converted to an MPEG2 codec to play on standard DVD players. Final Cut Pro does this. It was suggested by another former instructor that I try to see if iDVD will do this automatically on the Mac since its a free program. But I think Final Cut Pro is the way to go.

Yes, I know I am a month late on this discussion. FYI change movieclips to graphics and select loop or play once in the property inspector. That way the timeline of the _mc, now graphic, meshes like gears with the main timeline, excluding of course action scripted events. You must have the same number of frames on both, and more frames if they loop, all the way down the chain of nested timelines. When you move the playhead on the main timeline you will see everything move. Troubleshoot to see that the property inspector is set to loop or play once and that there are enough frames on each timeline up the chain to the original. To reverse action select on the main timeline those frames you want to reverse, right click, and select convert to keyframes from the dropdown menu. Then right click again and select reverse frames. If you need to find the exact number of a frame in the nested clip from the timeline below it, make a keyframe at that spot and when you select the object on the stage (not the timeline) the property inspector will tell you.
Sorry to put in my two cents worth at this late date. But I have noticed that books on using Flash for TV ani miss this important point so it is worth remembering. I draw 2-D ani for TV and learned this trick making stock eyeblinks and mouths.
We usually bring in the audio with an animatic video. In Flash 7 the import video dialog box gives you several choices. In the third pane of the VIDEO IMPORT WIZARD under advanced settings click EDIT. Then at the bottom of this box under track options > import into: choose CURRENT TIMELINE and > Audio track : choose SEPARATE. After importing the video, make a level for the separate audio and select it from the property inspector. This is the only way the audio will play in your Quicktime movie. It will not play from the video because the nested video does not give you the option to put the audio on the timeline if it is not separate when you import it. Once you see the squiggly track represented on the timeline you know you are on the air.
